Isn't there some kind of legendary guy that does killer mods to Teutonic microphones that moderates some kind of forum on the internet?

Come to think of it, his name is Stephen Paul. If only I could remember where his internet forum is. I bet he knows all about Klaus Heyne's work.

I have the privilege of living in the same town as Klaus and as such, most of the studios where I work use mics that are modified by him. They do sound very different than stock microphones. I love how they sound, but sometimes they lack headroom. Usually, if I am given the choice between a Klaus 87 and a stock 87, I will use the Klaus mic because I do find it more compelling. I have never used a Stephen Paul mic, but I am looking forward to the day! I have heard that both of these gentlemen do fine work, but have differing approaches to how they get the job done.

Here's how to interpret my remarks:

I was yanking Mr.audiokid's chain. I was not alluding to possible bad blood between you and Stephen or anyone else.

I personally thought that it was odd/amusing that audiokid would inquire about specialty mic mods from anyone but Stephen Paul since Stephen does moderate a forum at this site.

Since the original topic was Klaus Heyne mods maybe I shouldn't have posted on this thread to begin with, but I couldn't resist.

Every great microphone deserves a great microphone stand.

Since when does who moderates a forum where have anything to do with sound? Stephen and Klaus do similar yet different work.

My interest is audio and the more we learn about each other the better we will all be. Just because SP Mods here doesn't mean that we are bias to just his opinion. Heck, I like to see Klaus mod in this forum.

A friend told me that Klaus does really good work. I being from Canada and way up north in Canada to boot eh, have missed a fare amount... some names you are familiar with in the USA are completely strange to me. Member 2274, I missed you coming in Klaus, you've been registered here for awhile, cool! Glad to read your thread, thank you!

Jeff has a slight different sense of humor sometimes, he ment it in fun. He just needs an RO party once in a while lol.

I have been using mics modded by SPA and Klaus for many years. They both do excellent work. I recently used a Klaus rebuilt M49 orM249, I can't remember, that was one of the greatest sounding mics I've ever heard. The Klaus U87 mod is also very nice. I will say it is a great deal brighter than stock. Sometimes this is just what you are looking for, sometimes I feel it sways the delicate balance of what makes a U87 a U87 towards the too bright direction. In general I feel it is a big improvement on the stock sound.

Are you the one who has designed or is in the process of designing heavy duty mic stands? I seem to recall someone around here was doing it based on a thread a few months ago. If so, how is it going? Are they being manufactured yet and/or available for purchase? Is there a web site to see these puppies?

Yes, I'm the nut case tilting at windmills for over 2 years working on my heavy as hell mic stand. Gotta talk to a patent attorney before I post any pictures.

It's a mid-sized unit (6' without the boom), but built like a tank. Currently the base weighs over 27 lbs. The base has several unique features that must stay under wraps for now.

Wanna hang a 44BX over 4' straight out? No problem.

It uses heavy gauge steel tubing. I weigh just under 200 lbs and I can do chin-ups on it-because the vertical clutch is really strong. If you try the chin-up test on an Atlas (or Keith Monks or any aluminum stand) the vertical clutch caves and the boom bends like crazy.

Adjusting the vertical clutch does not loosen or tighten the base or boom. Huzzah.

Two piece adjustable length boom. All fittings are very tight, this baby has no slop or wiggle. It gives the user a very secure feeling when hanging heavy and/or expensive microphones.

Also working on accessory booms that clamp onto the stand, and are stronger than AKG or K&M boom arms or clutches. These puppies can hold a C12 42" horizontal for weeks on end (I've done it). Right now I've got three stands holding 9 mics for a drumkit. Saves a ton of space around the drums.

Release date is a little uncertain now due to my co-designer recently coming down with a life-threatening condition (starts with a "C"). Still hoping for this year though, with summer probably the earliest.

Klaus is legendary and a nice guy. A pretty darn good bass player too. Just so there's no confusion with new readers or even those that don't check the dates of the threads, Stephen Paul passed away several years back, so finding him will be quite the trick. Klaus is still in business here in Oregon. My U87 made it to his bench and got the 'cleaning and restoration' no mods. It is the best sounding U87 I have ever heard. I have sang into several Klaus modded mics. They are something all to themselves. Quite stunning in most cases. To the OP who resurrected this thread, If you are looking to sell your U87 then you should post it in the classifieds with a pic or two and the price and a contact information of some sort. There are folks who frequent these pages who might take an interest. But resurrecting a discussion thread to mention you have something for sale isn't the way to get it noticed. Good Luck to Ya.
