most plugin manufacturers will have trial versions on their websites you can fool around with, once your trial is up you can purchase the software online, i found its much cheaper this way than going to an actual store, where the mark-up is much higher...Steinberg makes some solid DX and VSTi plugins with trial versions, so does Voexengo and Native Instruments.
