We have been outsourcing our mastering for a while. One house has been using Waveburner to author the CD. I am looking for recommendations for other software with same functionality. I don't plan on doing any mastering with it, just want to clean up some fades and stuff for simple CDs.

Thanks

Personally, since I do a lot of video and audio, I have enjoyed using the Sony, Sonic Foundry Vegas program for all of my CD mastering. I used to use, years ago, the original version of CD architect. Generally, I have already made my recording the way I want it to sound but the beautiful thing about both CD architect and Vegas are the ability to lap dissolve between cuts and allow you to place the start code or "PQ" codes anyplace you want them to be, which should always be approximately one second prior to the beginning of the sound. Otherwise if placed at the very beginning of the sound you will cause, what we refer to as an "up-cut" which means it will cut into the first few milliseconds of your song and you don't want that. The other reason is that I do a lot of live shows and do not want individual cuts but rather to continue the ambience of the crowd, all the while still editing down extraneous waiting time or, noises for what sounds like, a continuous performance without any fade outs, between cuts. These newer versions of these CD mastering programs will also allow you to add other plug-ins for limiting or equalization on the fly.
