If I purchased a Digidesign 002 or 003 unit (with or without control board), what would be the best way for me to have a 12 mic preamp setup for simultaneous recording. since the 002 and 003 units only have 4 mic preamps. I don't want to have to buy 3 003 units to do this. If that solution would even work. I know there is a lot of knowledge on these boards, so I hope somebody can give me some good feedback.
FYI
I have looked at all of the MOTU and PreSonus and Mackie options, and am will probably go with one of these options, but I really want to give Pro Tools a chance (at least conceptually).

Actually, I do believe that you could buy three double 0 units and cascade them together to get 12 pre's. However, since the double 0 pre's are mediocre at best, it's not a good solution. An 8 channel preamp with ADAT out is about your only alternative. I believe that you won't be able to run above 48kHz that way because of the nature of lightpipe, but so be it. IMO most of the 8 channel pre's out there are a cut above the Digi 00 pre's anyway. The Focusrite Octopre (not LE) comes to mind. Of course, it would require the purchase of an ADAT card for that function. However, I have seen Octopre ADAT cards on eBay selling for around $75.00. I have heard the class A Octopre in conjunction with a Digi 002 using the ADAT in the same way as described. The pre's in the Octopre were definitely a slight notch above the stock 002 pre's. There are places that can mod the Digi pre's and make them more usable. This would probably make them more competitive with whatever 8 channel pre you might choose.

Nope, you can't cascade multiple double 0 units together. The cheapest solution is probably the Behringer ada8000, for a home recording guy that doesn't need really good pre's the behri would do the job just fine. I've done entire recordings with it but don't prefer it to some of my other pre's.
