Well for one, different converters will not get you more pre amp channels ...

My feeling is that transducers are the most important thing ... and a mic pre is just an extention of the microphone. Just as with mics that employ fet or tube electronics or different electronics with the same capsules .... a mic pre can make a huge amount of difference in what a mic sounds like.

I became convinced of this the day I first tried my U87ai with my Sebatron vmp4000e ..... I had never heard a U87 sound soooo good. No converter in the world could have done whay that Sebatron did for my U87.

I also feel that the best converters make a big difference as well .... but if you're feeding a killer converter a crap signal, all you will wind up with in the end is well converted crap. Cart before the horse and all that rot .....

Deffinately pres and mics before converters.

Well put Kurt. I'm glad that's what the outcome is. I completely agree with what you said about good pre's/mics. My first experiance putting my R-121 thru the EL8x and GR on my old Deluxe Reverb was divine. It makes me smile everytime! I just wasn't shure how much adding say two channels of kick ass conversion would help to get that "pro" sound when overdubbing. Sweet! Now to spend some dinero on pre's and mics. Whoohoo!!!! I'll save the conversion upgrades for later.

buy a good pre now and you will still be using it long into the future
and well after you have upgraded the computer and interfaces

I know your feeling J. I have been getting tempted heavily by Ebay'd Apogee converters. The old 2 channel 48k A/D to use as my gold channels. I think they go around $500 on the ebay.
