I replaced mine with a Lite-On Drive 52x24x52 (I paid $50), and it works like a charm. I also briefly had an old Sony 4x burner in there There's an excellent resource here: http://forums.xlr8yourmac.com/drivedb/search.drivedb.lasso
That's what I used to make my decision. Users there have noted that the Lite-Ons and Sonys have the most compatibility and the most successful installations (for CDRWs). Of course, YMMV. There's plenty of info at that site to aid you.
I've seen Pioneer DVD drives going for around $135-150 lately. While not exactly cheap, they're no longer unreasonable. Check at dealmac.com for the best prices.

DVD burners will also burn CDs, albeit at a slower rate than a newer, dedicated CD burner.
Also, there are DVD combo drives, which read DVDs and read/write/rewrite CDs. They are also usually slower at burning CDs than a dedicated CD drive.

Plextor is quality. If I were sending a master to a CD replicating facility, I would insist on a Plextor drive.
Lite-On is very, very good. The drive has never given men an ounce of problems.
I kinda look at it like Mercedes versus Lexus. Both will get you where are going in high style, but Mercedes is my preference if money is not an issue
