Yes...I feel that to have the center on a separate bus makes sense. I use completly different compression and eq for the center...I keep my low frequency sharply cut at 70 hz and down and limit the top to about 11K. I process it altogether differently and watch the phase relationship between the center, the front corners and the sides (7.1).
Depending on the program I will allow some pretty stiff headroom on the center channel...and plenty of noise reduction...but not gated.
