hmm... Grimm, AudioGaff.
There's still a lot of detail to gain!

I master on selected High End tube gear with very effective speakers.
I can hear more difference and detail than any Genelec or other active/typical studio monitor.
Plus it sounds like music, not like grainy needles comming out of the monitors.

I think with the amount specified here you could get on the right track and then have it upgradet later on.

Hey Henrik, Good for you. And what would these speakers be? Useless terms like "very effective" is very vague. Mabe the needles you hear are related to a hearing disorder problem you have as well as a problem that may be due to those very effective speakers. I'd get them both checked if I were you. The Genelec's are certainly not the best, but they are more than capable of enough detail to be doing most mastering work and excellent results can still be obtained with them.

(Useless terms like "very effective" is very vague), no I'm talking about the sensivety, my speakers are at 94db/1w/1m and that's indeed "very effective". Those are AudioNote ANE SP.

I can understand that you are skeptical about my other statement with the Genelec's and needles :D
But that's what i've heard from other mastering and recording studios that uses them.
But Genelec is not the only Brand that is off the track...

You are at one stage and I am at another stage in musical reproduction and i sure can't convince you about anything before you have heard the difference.

Well, it is possible you are right about that. You don't state what it is you exactly do, so if you are indeed a mastering engineer with monitors worthy of that posistion and profession, they will be not be best suited for both mixing and mastering or be even close to the budget that was stated. So I'm still trying to figure out what value any of your postings have to the original question that you still have not helped answer?

I don't understant you... what you write dosn't make sence!
I've stated that I'm a mastering engineer.
It's called "to master" when a mastering engineer is working :D

or be even close to the budget that was stated

I've written before and I will again for your sake:
"I think with the amount specified here you could get on the right track and then have it upgradet later on"
By that i mean getting some good speakers and a good amp. Try Audio Note, they make both.

So I'm still trying to figure out what value any of your postings have to the original question that you still have not helped answer?

Well... i can just say that you meet all my expectations about bad recording engineers.
I talk a different language than you when it comes to audio and i don't want to hear any more about that you don't understant me, and you provocating letters about it in your postings.
So do us all a favor! keep quiet!! ssshh...

Of couse you don't understand me, you got those damn needles in your ears, I already told you to go get them checked. And no, what you said is that you master on tube gear. Any idiot and wanker can do mastering these days and presume to think they are a mastering engineer who knows better. What skills you have or where you may fit in between those is becomming obvious.

Look troll, You haven't earned the right to be pompous with me. But you can either step up to the plate and offer advice of substance and value, or you can strike out and flap your lip like a punk. But don't come here and think your gonna shut me up. Why don't you go fix those sloppy microphonic tubes you use, pull those needles out of your ears, sit back and listen. People don't need to have a troll ruin their quest for knowledge and advice. Better yet, why don't you scram, and leave the advice to the seasoned pros. You may have better luck trolling in the mastering forum.

You guys can go at each other all you want as far as I am concerned and I am not taking sides in this discussion but this,

So do us all a favor! keep quiet!! ssshh...

doesn't fly with me at all.

Everyone has a right to share their opinions with each other here and no one should be telling the other to, "keep quiet!!.shhh!" ... and I am sure AudioGaff would not have responded in the way he did if he had not been provoked by that comment .. so let's share and not flame, mmm kay??

ITS THOSE DAMN NEEDLES AGAIN!!!crap......

I know of several Mastering houses that have Genelecs in their arsenals. These are by no means the ONLY speakers they use to master projects with but they are SOME of the speakers they use to check balances and tones on. Most are using the 1031's and the 1029's but their MMV.

And Henrik...while it is true that English is not your native language, and while it is all too apparent that your typing in this language is leaving a lot of your thoughts unclear to most of us,personal attacks on other members here is uncalled for.Your comments to AudioGaff and reall also John Grimm(you flamed his Adams' choice too)are really over the top and uncalled for.Perhaps you need to see that what you're saying is perhaps not as clear as what you're thinking and the brothas are having trouble getting past your use of OUR language. So chill out.AudioGaff is very knowledgeable as is John Grimm.Neither of them would claim to be a Mastering Engineer, but both have done 'masters' for their various projects etc.I myself have 'Mastered' demos and quick and dirty 'Master Mixes' for my projects over the years but I would never claim to be a Mastering Engineer. But in answer to the ORIGINAL QUESTION,products such as Genelec,Adams,Larger Tannoys, even Venerable JBL 4311's,a couple of Westlake Designs....there are others.....All of these are good enough in detail and clarity to do both non-pro mastering and tracking on.And like AG, I would not want to track on a set of speakers I was going to Master on.You'd be getting the same mistakes coming and going.I also would not master in the same room I tracked in...again...the same tonal variations would tend to pile up after each part of the process.

AudioGaff Thu, 12/04/2003 - 16:47

Kurt, you are right. I'll be humble enough to say I'm sorry about that. I mabe over reacted when I took the bait. I'll try to think a bit more before I let me fingers speak for me.

And thanks Dave for bringing to my attention the possible language/culture differences. I didn't even take the time to consider that.

I have never heard your speakers or tube gear so I really can't comment on whether they would be appropriate for both mixing and mastering. Sounds like it might be a nice setup for home hi-fi use though. There is one thing I am sure about however and that is that Audiogaff's setup will certainly get the job done as it has stood the test of time. No bones about it. As far as my own system goes I don't feel any need to defend it. Don't care the slightest how other's feel about it as that's not the point. Monitors are such a subjective thing that it's really a personal decision. However I do suggest we get back to the original question as to some nice monitors within his price range. Why don't you list the price of your recommendations and tell us why you feel these are more accurate then the other suggestions here? I'd also like to thank Kurt for getting us all back on track. As you all know I'm a big fan of open dialog.
