I have a couple of RE20s, and they're great! Practically indestructible, too.
I use them with some consoles that have "global switching" for the phantom power and have had no issues...I would think that a mis-wired cable might cause a problem if you applied phantom, but...???
What are the details of the "incident", pray tell?
not much of a story
new mic in the mail
plugged it in, no signal
turned the phantom off, still no signal
plugged a 57 to check connections, no problems
the mic is just dead... must find that shipping box...

I have seen that mic hammer nails, literally! I don't think that even bouncing around in a UPS truck could harm it....something's sure funky here...
