What's up guys, I have been workin all summer and now I got some money burning a hole in my pocket. I want something listenable enough to put on a CD.
What I have that will be used:
Alienware 51m 7700 laptop, 3.4 ghz, 2 gigs of ram
I can't find the sound card info, it's Realtek I think...
Shure SM57
What I plan to get:
PreSonus firepod - $400
Firewire card - (I think my friend paid $25 for his)
2 microphone stands - (Any recommended? Couldn't see them costing more than $60)
1 microphone cord - $20
What I don't know about:
Books on recording (Books aren't that much money, so suggest away!)
A good microphone for acoustic guitar + vocals. I am hearing good things about an SM58 for vocals, but what about a step up like an SM86? I will not be singing and playing at the same time for these purposes, so a mic that is good for BOTH acoustic guitar and vocals is ideal.
Monitors? What are the difference between these and regular computer speakers? Are there any affordable ones that will show the truer sound of a song?

I don't use real drums in my songs, so Micing drums is not an issue. My main style is acoustic guitar sort of similar to Jack Johnson, but I also like a punk rocky style as well.
The stuff I know that I'm going to get adds up to say $530 after tax. I would love to spend around $800, but will go up to about $1000 if I have to. So please help me out! Hopefully this year at school I can look into getting an internship at a recording studio as well. Thanks everyone

About the Mackie, boy does it sure look complicated! I'm sure it is very nice but I just want something small, affordable and gets the job done. I found the ebay link that you were talking about, and I really appreciate it. I think I'm actually going to do a buy it now on it. If this AT2020 is pretty good, maybe I will have enough budget to get some mediocre monitors as well. I was also looking into the SM81 since I mainly play acoustic guitar. Would this be a good path to go?

What is your budget for a mic alone expenditure? You will find especially with not much to compare it to the AT2020 will fit into many applications. I LOVE it on a distorted guitar cab, and backing vox. The SM81 is a good mic it really is, they make great overheads when paired. the AT2020 is going to make a really great asset until you grow out of it and replace it with an AT4040. I promise the 2020 will blow you away especially for a free mic. I honestly wouldn't buy monitors with the remaining funds. What is your monitoring source as of now? Let me know what you have, and the funds you have remaining, and I could better guide you to saving your funds, or a purchase that would make a difference.

I have a Mackie Onyx 1640 with firewire card installed in like new condition on the selling block for $1100. It will tap dance around a firepod...this is what I upgraded to from a firepod actually. If you do buy the firepod buy it on ebay, from the dealer selling it in a package with the AT2020. You will find many uses for the AT2020 I promise.
