Ah thanks Dave, sorry, the sub-forums confuse me.

So, you have consulted the manual? This would be the first place to look. It seems like a very basic thing to be asking about. Am I missing something? Record arm your current track and make sure that the previously recorded track is not record enabled and that you are not input monitoring from that track. There shouldn't be much more to it than that unless I am totally misunderstanding the question.

According to Adobe, there is no session metronome. I don't know why they did this but you can always loop a midi file in the desired time signature. For that matter you could use audio loops.

Regarding the manual: I dont have one because I downloaded the trial Audition 5.5 with intent to purchase.

I did solve the metronome problem by using one from an online site and having the musician play with headphones attached to the computer.

But then, when we couldn't figure out where and how to enable playback whilst recording a new track (both google and the adobe tutorial site woefully unhelpful) so we switched to garage band and I am just going to export the tracks to my friend who has Pro Tools on a separate computer.

However, I wanted to give Audition a second chance since I heard how highly people praised it on this forum.

Before I go on, let me give you a run down of the equipment I am using.
2011 MacBook Pro (no external sound card)
Profire 610
Neumann TLM-102

My other problem was getting Audition to send output to Profire, so when recording, the headphones can attach to the Profire Interface and send sound to the listener.

hueseph, let me explain further: We opened up Audition, then we created a multiTrack file.

When I reopened this multi-track file, all the music we had saved to it was gone. The tracks were empty, even thuough we had saved the file as a .sesx.

Not to worry, we had saved each track as a .aif and when I dragged the track into the multi track in Audition, the songs won't play.

I believe this is a feature of the trial software. That is, you can't save or import. You can only track and export to wav or mp3, whichever the case may be.

Well, I was able to save it as a .aif, so I'm not sure how true that is. Do they really infringe on trial versions like that?

I'm not positive on the limitations. They are different for each program in CS5.5. Have you tried at the Adobe forum or do they require you to have a registered version for that?

Incidentally, I'm not a fan of Audition. I know there are some people who love it but It's never really turned my crank.

Well I have been checking out the help.adobe site, which google didn't direct me to, incidentally, an oddity in itself.

I think I have figured out how to "route" the sound, my next big issue will be figuring out how to actually play the .aif files I dragged into the multiTrack, unless that feature really is disabled in the trial.

I'm not a fan of Adobe. They make great photo editing software but their other media programs are not my favorite. I bought Dreamweaver before Adobe bought them out. Great software, very light on the cpu. Then Adobe comes in and it's bundled and re badged as InDesign. Meh. Then there's Premier. What a clunker that thing is.

Adobe to me is like Microslop. They just eat up other technology and morph it into their own thing for better or worse. I know there are people out there who love Adobe products. I suppose it's a matter of familiarity.

I have to say, their photo editing tools, while not perfect, are very nice and very good, which is where I am more familiar. Sound stuff has always intimidated me, but I was disappointed in the lack of metronome as well.

So we used garage band instead, and my composer is now editing via Pro Tools. Jack Attack opined that Audition was superior to even Pro Tools HD, but whether he was referring to the CS 3 version or the 5.5, I am not sure. I am definitely interested in learning more although it isn't my strongest field of study or interest.
