Monitors for mastering.....

I would start at the $12,000 a pair price point (B&W 802D comes to mind).

Monitors for mixing.....

I would start at $400 a pair at a minimum (KRKs perhaps...maybe some M-Audios).

If you're not willing to spend the money on monitors, don't expect to get good results.

Additionally, room acoustics MUST be considered. Even if you had a $20K pair of monitors, if you have a room which is not correct, the monitors are useless.

Okay so $400 for a pair of decent mixing monitors... is the difference they will make $400 worth?

I know there are other variables involved but would you say that monitors are critical to the mixing process?

Trustworthy monitors and a good acoustic space are THE single most important aspects of mixing!

My favorite "cheap" pair of monitors is the NHT Pro M-00s (pronounced "Moo")

Also, KRK ST6s with a good power amp is good too.

Okay! So you have convinced me.

I have a feeling the best place for me to mix might be my bedroom or maybe my kitchen or living room. Ill take photos of all three rooms and post them if you would be able to tell from the photos if they would be acceptable to mix in.

If you dont mind, take a look at the song I posted in the critique section. I am guessing that you are experienced in this field. I mixed them on shitty speakers not made for mixing =) They have a bunch of added low end and enhanced Eq tweaks to make the game sounds thrilling!

Okay I am looking at the KRK you mentioned at musicians friend. They are passive? Whats the difference between passive and active?

Is this what I would need to make the monitors work?

If I can get the speakers for $200 and then this and have a pretty decent monitoring system then that would be excellent.

Passive means it has no amplifier built in and would thus need an external amplifier (the one you linked to is a fine piece, especially for the price). However, I wouldn't put it in the same space that you are in. The fan makes noise and will definitely be noticable.

but if you must only spent 100 look into the TascamVL-S21 Youi will find them at Sweetwaters for under a 100 clams or get a good set of headphones

If the intent is for you to stay in the $150 price range area I would strongly consider buyin a pair of Tannoy PBM's used on ebay and getting one of those super clean Samson 60 watt power amps with 0.003 THD.
