Hello All,
I have done a search on the forums and couldn't find any topics that directly related to my question. So right now for tracking and mixing I'm using some no-name brand of stereo speakers and resently found some JBL multimedia speakers with a sub in my attic. Are multimedia speakers useless when it comes to tracking and mixing because of frequincey cuts and boosts that they have? I'm pretty desperate for monitors so what do I have to loose, but will multimedia speakers do bad to my recordings? While I've got my momentum here, where should I place the bass sub?
Keep in mind that I'm just doing demos and don't do a lot of EQing.

I have never found any multimedia speakers that I like. They usually sound too wimpy, lack power and headroom and sound rather colored. And, I am a big fan of JBLs, but not their consumer speakers, they only have the name on the sticker. Perhaps a reasonably priced near Field, pair of selfpowered monitors from your local music store would do better? I think once you get something like that and listen to your favorite highly regarded CDs, you'll come up with a better focus with your listening as to what you want to accomplish?

Are they the best speakers that youve got?
Hook them up!
What do YOU think of them?
Can you hear everything?
My monitors are my prized posession. They were cheap 10 years ago, and I have listened to EVERYTHING through them. Gives me a big advantage I think when I am recording / mixing on them.
I think you can get great results using less than state of the art equipment, but a decent set of monitors are the gift that keeps on giving.
Are you ever NOT going to want to have a killer set of speakers around?
Shoot.

The big problem with most multimedia speakers is that they do *everything* "justice" - No matter how good or how bad it actually may sound, everything pretty much sounds similar and homogenized through multimedia and gaming speaker setups.
