I got my hands on a heavy duty 4 u rackmount case from an dead backup power supply. It sits in my basement awaiting body parts.

I also have 2 'donor' computers that are more than willing to giveup some drive bays and hardware to this project.

Right now my PC is in a Antec server case. The big one. Too big, actually, but I got it for a steal so I use it. But it hampers travel, which I do occasionally with it.

So, has anyone done something like this; or have any input to doing this? I know I could just buy an empty case for $100 or so, but my $ is better spent elsewhere.

Like on guitar lessons. :lol:

Putting your components into a rackmount case is easy. The issue you may have is noise. Rackmounts tend to produce more noise than other styles for 2 reasons,

1. they tend to be a little tougher to cool due to their layout so fan noise can be an issue along with drive noise.

2. Rackmounts are designed with IT in mind not audio so noise specs aren't a big issue in computer rooms and data centers with air conditioners wirring away 24/7.

That said rackmounts are great if you can isolate yourself from the noise and portability is a big plus. The 4U design is perfect for a novice builder as it uses standard hardware and not backplanes or other types found in smaller or larger cases. My mobile rig is a 4U and I love it but my #1 DAW is still a server tower for noise reasons.

Give it a shot. I think you'll like it.
