I have to record vocals and instruments. I need a preamp (for mic and instrument) and a compressor. What's the best bang for my buck? I'm trying to be as efficient as possible with my spending while I'm still poor.

Also, my soundcard is a Delta 1010LT, so is it possible to get by without getting a mixer?

Please share your expertise or advice. Thanks.

I am too inexperienced on mic pre-amps to make a recommendation but I wonder whether you do need a compressor given that you can do all the compression in software once captured.

As long as you pre-amp and input channels have enough dynamic range or head room to take the signal then you can record clean raw sound and apply dynamics later.

However compression at record can colour a sound in a way that can be beneficial musically. Sibilance and plosives may be removed by soft compressors that the software compression cannot equeal.
