Or does the M-audio audiophile have everything that he will need?
Should he need much else?

The audiophile is reallly great for the money. Im not well up on Freeware thats available for recording, bit theres usually a "lite" version of some recording software that comes with the hardware. When I both an Audiophile some years ago, there was a lite version of Logic included. I would imagine a few enquiries on the M-Audio site would get you the info you want

I'm far from an expert, but I trust my ears. I would point your "friend" in the direction of a nice Tascam Porta-studio. Analog is a way better proving ground for the inexperienced. Also, you get instant results instead of dealing with ram, buffer, and processor issues.

I think for beginning songwriters it might be best to learn about getting good level and tone, instead of worrying about digital dropout.

I'm quite confident that the results you'll get initially from tape will steer you towards analog tracking. And once its in the analog realm you can convert it to digital and capture the realism. But you can't go the other way. Trust your parents.
