Nice weekend
:)
Digidesign's Brian Carter has briefed us about the new ICON D-control surface to be announced at the NAB show in Las Vegas next month, and we can finally 'go public' on what we've heard.
A group of members of Pro Tools Users and RSPE Audio Consultants have seen an eight-page glossy brochure detailing the new Digidesign|ICON system which is a way of describing an complete system incorporating Pro Tools HD, the new large format D Control and the X-Mon monitoring system interface.
The control surface is larger and more expensive (we're hearing $60k-ish) than Pro Control or Control 24. The main centre section has built in keyboard, trackball, 16 Penny and Giles Faders (expandable to 80 faders), and a comprehensive full-length EQ, dynamics and plugin channel strip similar in look and feel to a high-end console channel strip. There is an impressive metering section and vesa-lCD arm. The analog monitoring section is built into a separate rack mount unit called the X mon which has the same look and styling as an HD interface, and DB25 dsub connectors. No news yet on the much-rumoured smaller 'Mackie / logic control sized' Digidesign control surface.
The ICON system will be announced at NAB and shipping shortly afterwards. We will, of course, have all the information, pictures and details at the next Pro Tools Users meeting in late April.

Thanks for the post. $60,000? I wish Digidesign the best of luck with that. David
Especially considering that we will be seeing DSD systems invading production in a year or so.
Anything that isn't entirely analog is going to be so many doorstops in the medium future, when we all upgrade. And even high end analog equipment is going to have very limited use, by comparision with old gear's use today.

60 K's for a control surface? leave it to the hi end guys to come up with that- (some studios with money to burn surely will buy it for bragging rights) You can get quite a few quality preamps with that much dough- throw in a couple of mics to boot! and I complained that i thought mackie control was overpriced...
