First off, thanks guys for all your advice on tom mics, it helps a lot,
almost made my decision, I'm trying the Audix stuff next week, then i'll make my decision.

however, while on the subject of drum mics, what about hi hats,
i listened to the AT3031 and thought it sounded nice for the bucks,
once again. any advice!

has anyone tried the C1000 on hats?

I use the C-1000 on hi-hat, but only because it's what I've got. It does a good job, just a bit harsh in the upper end. When they first came out, for the price they were a great buy and very versatile. I got nice recordings of acoustic guitar and ensemble singing (using two in an X-Y configuration) as well as using it on hi-hat. Now I still love them for live vocal mics (our band uses 4 of them), but have used them less and less for recording. I think there are better mics out there for the same or less money. I actually would like to get my hands on another Oktava MC-012, which i use for overheads. I would use that on hi-hat. I bet the A-T you mention would be good. And there are plenty of options if you want to spend your kid's inheritance (Neumann, Josefson, etc.). So anyway, for me, the answer would be use the C-1000 if you have one - and continue the search for something a little better. But I would not buy a C-1000 just for the purpose of using it on hi-hat.

A 57 on hi hats? Are you joking?

Dynamic mics generally sound like crap on cymbals and stuff. What you need is a good condenser mic.

I usually don't even mic the hats, if I do I always find myself turning it down becuase theres to much of it. The overheads seem to pic it up fine.

But I do heavy stuff where the drummer is really loud. Don't know if not miking the hats would work for other forms of music.

sometimes the best sounds come from not following what other people do...

Well if your blending it in I guess that's a different story and you may be able to get some interesting sounds from that. I just thought you meant you were strickly using a 57 on the hats.

Terry Date usually uses an SM57 on hats... it sounded pretty good on those limp bizkit and deftones records :D
My personal favorite is the AKG C451.

Funny that you would mention Terry Date and the Deftones. The Deftones Around the Fur happens to be one of my favorite recordings. You gotta love the way that snare sounds.
