I monitor direct through my console (Studiomaster Mixdown Classic 8- 32X8)I record,monitoring direct due to latency issues.I run an external mic preamp on the insert of the channel I am recording.Am I getting the full headroom?I am thinking of getting a FMR RNP to achieve a more open vocal sound.Peace,Barefoot

You are getting the headroom of either the mic pre or the insert
You are getting the headroom of either the mic pre or the insert input whichever is lower.
So if the insert in has less headroom than the mic pre, that will be the headroom you end up with.
