Since I know Harvey is partial to them, and a few others here are as well, I thought it'd be worth mentioning that Radio Shack has these mics on sale for $30 a pop. If nothing else, get a few and sell them to the next band that asks you if you can help them with their live setup ;)

I use them the same way I'd use 57s mostly. I used one on a guitar cabinet a few weeks ago and it wasn't bad. I routinely mic rack toms and snare with them and get good results. They're not E604s or 421s, but they'll do fine for me.
Harvey can chime in at some point...I know he likes them as part of his recommended "budget mic kit"
