Hi
I've been reading about some mic companies making different versions of their mics for the US market. The Brauner Phantom is supposedly voiced differently for the US because TransAmerica group wanted a different sound. Has anyone heard about this? Is this the case for other companies?

I read this as part of a forum discussion, but it sounds a bit odd, so I was wondering if it was nonsense. I know that European and American tastes in audio have been quite different in the past, but I don't think that's so obvious anymore. We all use the same gear now -or do we?

Cheers
John Stafford

Hi John,
Speaking for Brauner, that is not quite correct. The Phantoms are the same in Europe and US. The special edition US mics are named differently: The Valvet Voice (which may also be available in Europe, but was designed for us) and the VM1 K.H.E., which is exclusive to the US (since Klaus custom tunes each one).

With all our other mic lines, there are no special EU versions or US versions-- other than voltage differences.

On the other hand, I still believe that European tastes differ from US tastes in Audio. The US still has much more of a fascination with "color." You are right however, that things are homogenizing and the lines of differentiation are fading.

Hi Todd
Thank you for clearing this up for me. As I said this came from some other forums, and it had occurred to me that maybe the mic under discussion was the Valvet Voice and was not the Phantom, given that the special Valvet was designed for the US market.

One thing I wasn't aware of was that the VM1 K.H.E was exclusive to the US, but I suppose it makes sense given that Klaus Heyne works on each one personally.

I'm curious about the special edition Phantom Anniversary edition. Is this the ordinary Phantom C?

I'm seriously considering a VM-1, but it might take a while to get the money together!

Thank you for clarifying these issues for me.

Phantom AE

Hi John,

There are small differences in the Phantom AE, other than cosmetic differences. Dirk said he made minor modifications and it sounds a little better. I don't have more information than that as yet. Also, it comes with a VoVox cable-- very high quality. We should be getting some into stock within a couple weeks. I'll try to be more specific at that time.

Thanks!

Todd
