Why do you say that?
I think he should buy a pos mic and save up your money to go to a studio to record.
I am just sick of people getting a computer program on there pc and then thinking they just need an expensive condensor mic and a xlr to 1/4 to 1/8 cable to plug into there sound card to record.
just my opinion, I get that question all the time at work. People that know I'm into recording will always ask stupid shit like that.

Neumann U87 ($2000)
Electrovoice RE20 ($700)
Rode NTK (or NT2?) ($600)
Neumann U47FET (whatever you're lucky enough to find one for!)
Shure SM58 ($100)
For female rappers, the Audio Technica AT4047 ($500) is supposedly very good. I think it would be good for men too, if you get really close and roll off some of the bass -I'm not a particular fan of the bass cut on the mic itself, but it depends on the voice.
If I was to do a rap record, I'd take a look at the Brauner Phantom C ($1500). I don't know how good the Shure SM58 mentioned above actually is for rap, but it is cheap. If you're on a tight budget, you might take a look at the Rode NT-1000 or AT3035 (around $150 each?). You could also look at Studio Projects mics if you don't want to spend a lot, but I can't say how good these would be for rap, as I've never heard any of them.
The Neumann U87 and Electrovoice mics mentioned above are frequently used for ordinary speech recordings and for broadcast use. That's the kind of sound they have. I think for rap records you should experiment and throw away the rule book, as the sort of sound that would be unuseable for most singing can work really well in carrying a rap, especially if you're looking for an aggressive and in-your-face type of sound. This can be very exciting.
