Hey, I understand the concept of staying in the digital domain until the end (CD), but I've been wanting to strap something like a FATSO and/or a Pendulum comp across the 2-bus at/after mixdown. (no mastering house involved after)
Should I be 'stuck' with plugins and use that typo 'o' gear to track only?
Should I maybe push my 24/44.1 to 24/48 to get the most of my bits before doing this? (Then convert & downsample)
Should I just chill?
I've seen a few opinions on going back & forth in & out of digital, so whatcha think?

I initially started recording everything at 48k in order to be compatible with ADAT and other stuff, as well as to get the most out of the signal (before anyone chimes in, yes I realize what an oxymoron that is, heh). And I still use that rate whenever possible, mainly for compatibility now. The difference in quality from 16 -> 24bit as opposed to 44.1 -> 48k is much more noticeable.
If you are already doing work in 44.1, I wouldn't bother switching. Some say the conversion process will negate any sonic advantage to recording at 48, which is near negligible to begin with. 96k has some potential to widen that gap, but even this is the source of some heated debate (as you may have already seen here on RO :) ).
If you're going thru an analog mixer (which I see you're not) then that is the ideal time to convert to 44.1, preferrably thru a high quality converter. This would also be a great time to introduce a mix compressor, before the ADC as it goes to DAT/CD/whathaveyou. You could also do the same thing with just your DAW. DAW -> hiqualityDAC -> comp -> hiqualityADC -> DAT/backtoDAW/CD/etc. The DAC and ADC are key in this case. If you're just using 888's or similar quality converters, there won't be enough of your mix left to justify a $2000+ box in between, IMO.
