hello!

I'm going to use Alesis harddisk recorder and a console with lots of outboard gear as preamps, compressors, noise gates, effect units, equalizers...
How to use this gear on a mixdown, when I'm thinking of mix some things on a computer?

Should I add my outboard gear things before sending my mix to a computer for final touches?
Or should I first correct and add computer stuff and then send that back to a recorder and then add outboard effects, eqs ?

I have couple of solutions:
First one is to send files to the computer via ftp then correct some minor things there and send it back to alesis hd24 track by track to add outboard gear there and record to stereo recorder. That's one option
The second is described here:
http://www.festivalstudios.com/Protools.html

I'm thinking of the first one, because I can get a cheaper soundcar with 24/96 capability, some cubase system to work with track, to cut to add midi stuff... and then send that back to alesis and equalize it, compress it, add effects...

Any suggestions?

Who are you??? Man, don't give advice if you don't know what you're talking about. We don't need misinformation here, there are plenty of REAL experts that can answer questions... and if you be quiet and read, you'll learn too.

ok sproll it is like this we all know if you go in a big or large studio they use out board fx and in computer and they do have differnt sounds...so if you are a want to be engineer bring it to me and my be you learn...oh and if you mix with both computer and out board gear and you do not hear the differnce you should not step foot in a studio...i live 4 this shit and that is basic
oh i study to long not to know what i am talking about....
i spend money on my music you should do the same.....

what a worthless thread

what do you mean by "add computer stuff"?

It was a joke; I was just trying to add some fuel to the fire of this thread of misinformation and misdirection. Sorry, I'm a bit of a jerk I guess. I just thought this guy was asking such a crazy question so I gave him a crazy answer that doesn't mean anything (

Yes. ALWAYS add computer stuff before or after outboard gear. Especially if it sounds best.

), but it might mean something to him. Bad attempt at being funny.

And canecutter: Have you been to a studio lately? You might find that they are using computers quite a bit. I'm not sure what you mean by "

if you mix with both computer and out board gear and you do not hear the differnce you should not step foot in a studio

," because a lot of studios use both to do different things; so there is no difference to compare to. Did that make any sense??
BTW, my computer makes more than one tone. Maybe you should try a better sound card?

Lemme guess.....Hip-hop?

OK, now you're making sense. Earlier you were talking jibberish and trash and broad generalizations. Being specific helps: hardware reverb vs. software reverb.
I'm also not totally blown away by Powercore reverbs like some people. In a lot of cases I would even take a convolution reverb over it when I can find the right impulse sample.

It's sad to see how prevelant bad writing skills have become. I think a lot of it is coming from the RAP and Hip Hop practice of mis spelling and mis speaking intentionally .. or at least acting like it's on purpose. It does not impress me in the least.

I have been seeing this a lot more lately ... bad spelling and just plain lousy sentance structure. It doesn't help that a lot of people seem to think that "u" for you and 4 as "for", is acceptable.

Some of these post are from countries that don't use English as a primary language and I do the best I can with them .. Those that are originating from English speaking countries, IMO there's no excuse. I've pretty much stopped responding to them.

heh heh, yeah this thread is getting out of hand....

Hey cantmix, (funny name) my setup is pretty modest right now but I have been building it up for the past 8 months or so. I have done a bit of recording in a full studio and quite a bit at college. I worked for the school recording orchestras and recitals, and had a couple audio classes where I got to record whatever the heck I wanted.
So here goes a quick rundown of my home studio:
PC based: P4 2.67 Ghz, 1.3 GB RAM, 60 GB WD HD, 120 GB Barracuda HD
Soundcard: RME Multiface w/PCI card
Preamps: GT Brick, Safesound P1, Presonus MP20 w/BurrBrown, SP VTB-1, DMP3, hopefully a Sebatron 4-channel soon....
Mics: SM57, ADX-90 (3), D6, Josephson C-42 matched pair, AKG C-430 (2), Nady Starpower-1 (talkback mic heehee).
Software: Cubase SX2, UAD1 StudioPak + Precision Limiter, TC Powercore, DigitalFishPhones plugs, etc.
Cables: Mogami Neglex and Monster Studiolink
Monitors: Maudio BX8
"Monitor": Dell 17" CRT
uhhhhhh......that's about it right now.

Don't take me to be too much of an expert, I'm just close enough to the beginning of setting up a home studio to remember a lot of things that might help some people. I still need advice too! Hopefully I'll have something to post on the mp3 forum soon to get some critiques. I have a pretty funny rap-style commercial I did in college that I should post somewhere. It's friggin great 8)
