typically, on a mixer, do tracks need to be assigned in order for signal to output from a tracks direct out? meaning, do they need to be assigned L-R, 1-2, 3-4, for signal to be output? or are they always being output regaurdless of assigning? i am referring to the Allen & Heath MixWizard 1442 if that means anything. thanx.

I don't know, it depends how the mixer is designed/configured. Often the direct out is post trim, fader gain, eq. On some mixers there are switches and/or jumpers that you can configure for each channel and/or bus for routing or pre/post selection of the fafer gain, aux, effects and direct outs. Check your manual or the manufacture website for the mixer's signal flow diagram where this kind of info is given.

If I understand your question correctly, no - not usually. Direct outs for each channel always output any signal that is present on that channel. For most mixers, nothing comes out of the sub bus outputs unless you assign something to them which is usually channels but can sometimes be other external inputs or somthing like aux/effects sends or returns . You can usually assign any input channel to any or all of the bus sub masters and to the main L&R outputs.
