No question is stupid one but I can understand the face and parallel.

Scenario... We sold him PT last year so digital is not an issue with this question. He bought digital because of ease, popularity and price.
He wants a good pre-amp to help soften things up now. After hearing about the vmp line my client asks many good questions. One of them is this: Why build a pre-amp with tubes. What would I tell him? Designers build with tubes because? or look at him like this :s: . LMAO

I'm not Sebatron but I do have one of his vmp preamps.. I like tubes because they have a lot of nice top end. The vmp is crisp and present but not harsh or brittle. When I do a song where all the tracks are recorded through the vmp-4000, it almost mix's its self.. Transformers and fire bottles.. for me that is the sound.. warm and fat, crisp and present, never harsh, cold or brittle sounding. These are the "flavor" reasons.. I leave the science to Sebatron... If I could allow myself to design with chips etc. I would.
It so much cheaper and easier….also quicker.
I would also be driving a ‘newer’ car.

But in my heart of hearts I would know there would always be a better sound.

SOME ALTERNATIVE SEBATRON POINTS ON VALVES IN AUDIO:

1/ LESS circuitry is required to maintain a proper gain network within the unit , this means better transient detail.
Valves supply more than enough gain.

2/ DYNAMIC RANGE is better because the valve will overdrive sweetly … this means a quieter circuit as well.

3/ Once the audio has been converted to high impedance domain after the input transformer , it is also MUCH more easier to process …. EQ and/or compression circuit… effectively.
That’s why it’s better/easier to include those components close to the preamp…in the same box.
Then incorporate a good buffer stage to interface with other equipment properly.

As far as pres go, I prefer valve, but I use SS as well in comps etc, in fact the group DIY SSL clone comp which is SS ROCKS on my drum groups, but each to their own I suppose. I too though have a VMP400E and wouldnt dare use the other pres I have here now, tube and SS :)
