Okay, so we know about the Electro-Voice PL series being rebadged versions of Electro-Voice mics for sale through instrument dealers, and it's not hidden knowledge that most of the budget large diaphragm condensers are made in two Chinese factories. But I think I've picked up on something or need more sleep.
It's known by some that the Audix TR-40 omni measurement mic has an electret capsule by MBHO, though it supposedly has its own electronics design. It is supposed to be of the same family as the [="http://www.mbho.de/deutsch/mbc-550.htm"]MBC-550[/]="http://www.mbho.de/…"]MBC-550[/]and MBC-540, which are more expensive. (Sorry about the German, can't find much solid English info and lost the English brochure I had.) Okay, so what, this has been posted on R.A.P. before, if not here already.
Okay, this is weird, check out the Audix SCX-One modular mic, and the capsules for it on the same page. Compare to the MBHO

The mics don't spec the same as the Audix, although the capsules appear identical. So, can anyone confirm that Audix is just spec'ing a different mic body preamp to go with MBHO heads? Has anyone compared the the Audix with any of the modular MBHO? (Interested in measurement vs measurement, as well.)
BTW, I'm not sure he meant the SCX-One, but in one R.A.P. post Scott Dorsey lumped other offerings together with other brands as being rebadged 797 Audio mics. All the Audix mics are branded as "made in USA". Made from imported components, I guess.

They LOOK identical, Bear, but that's as much as I know. As for the price, I've seen MB mics vary wildly. The best price I've seen is the MBP603 body (which I own) for £128 + VAT with capsules for £66 + VAT from Canford. This was in the 2001 catalogue but I heard that they ddn't do too well over here and are hard to get hold of. If Canford still stock them I'll be getting another body and a few capsules. They really are superb - great for detailed acoustic instruments and also for drum overheads. I've also used them as vox mics for interviews and they have given me the most clarity and detail, not to mention warmth, of any mic I've used under £1000.
YMMV but I'm over the moon about these little mics!

You might have noticed that I once posted on RAP that the US distributor bascially confirmed to me (over the phone) that the capsule is the same but Audix supplies it's own electronics. I've never taken them apart to confirm it, of course, as I've never actually had my hands on either. Of course, Harvey is the guy who turned us on to the Audix "measurement mic" as being so nice (especially for overheads), and that it was the same as the MBHO, though admittedly it took Harvey a while to get his model numbers straight. :-)
I can confirm that Audix mic looks identical to my MB mic. These mics are fantastic!
