IMHO a couple of items in the list belong to high-end rather than to the basic system. I have

1. InWin S-523 case, 250W, $50
2. ATI 3D Radeon VE video card, $45

and am quite happy with them :)

Welllll ... I'm not so sure that most would recommend a 250 watt power supply for such a system ... probably not less than 350. Given the fact that the Antec power supplies are notoriously awesome, and given the quality and features of this case, at this price, the Plus1080 is definately the "best bang for the buck".
I'm also glad that you're having good luck with your graphics card, but the Matrox card is by far the most compatible with audio apps. For the price, and considering that about 90% of the audio guys use it, we really have to recommend it to avoid "issues". Some graphics cards work great with some audio apps, but not with others.
You must bear in mind that we want to recommend components that will add-up to be a rock-solid, powerful, expandable system. Once you start cutting corners to save a few bucks here and a few bucks there, you run into problems. If you add up the total price of the components needed from the list, you will find that you will end up with one hellacious puter at a VERY good price. If someone wants to vary from the list, then that is their choice, and hopefully they won't have to deal with the consequences.

This is true..I've come across three or four instances of the ATI card causing crashes or glitches with Nuendo, SCSI and a UAD card...Matrox G550 fixed that right away!
