I plug my brick pre into a mic input on the breakout box of my Aardvrark direct pro soundcard using an XLR cable. If I turn on phantom power on the ark could I damage or cause any problems to my brick?

I want to plugin other condenser mics to the ark which require phantom while using the brick pre.

Thanks,
Larrye

I have the Aardvark 2496 Direct Pro. The only inputs it has are spdif and 4 mic inputs which are the XLR - 1/4 inch combos. You can set the inputs to line by using the ark manager (software). While ark was still in business they said the pres of the inserts are bypassed when set to line-in the software, but I am not sure that's true.

Looking at this page ... at the specs

emusician.com/recording/emusic_aardvark_direct_pro_2/

Analog Inputs (4) combo connectors: XLR mic inputs (60 dB level trim) with phantom power (48V); ¼" unbalanced line inputs at -10 dBV (30 dB level trim); ¼" balanced line inputs at +4 dBu (30 dB level trim)
Analog Outputs (4) ¼": +4 dBu/-10 dBV; (2) aux RCA: -10 dBV

Analog Inputs - ¼" balanced line inputs at +4 dBu (30 dB level trim)
... that's the good bit

in addition to the spec I found this in the text
" The XLR mic inputs on the Direct Pro 24/96 have 60 dB level trim, so you can't plug line-level signals in to them; you must use ¼-inch plugs for that. "

make an XL3 female to TRS ¼"
pin 2 = tip
pin 3 = ring
pin 1 = sheild

8)
it's all good

Kev,

Thank you SO much!!!! I REALLY thought I knew what I had, but I obviously did not. I have been using the the XLR out of the brick to an XLR input of the ARK. This might explain some things. I already have an XLR to 1/4" TRS cable I can use. Hope I haven't damaged anything with my stupidity.

Thanks again,
Larrye

Jb,

I just recorded a couple of tracks using the TRS cable and now it works great with my tube mic. The brick lacks enough gain to drive my modified nady ribbon by itself ( I have to add some line gain from my ark card). But I really like the sound of the brick. It does have enough gain to REALLY inprove the sound of the ribbon. I have not had a chance to try the brick with any other non-condenser mics.
