So I'm wondering if there is a preferred method for close Micing in stereo, or if this is commonly done, or if it's a major faux pas.

It seems to me in my reading here and elsewhere that the XY, ORTF, and Bloomingdales configs are usually used for room mics where they are a ways back from the sound source.

Today I was recording an acoustic guitar. I spent $10 one of those devices that holds two mics at a time, set them to X-Y and then I was able to move the whole thing around as a unit(I guess that's what everyone probably does).

So I realised that I didn't want one pointing at the sound hole and the other up the neck, or it would sound like hell, so I turned the whole business 90° so they were at the 14th fret, 8" away, pointing at either upper bout. In the interest of phase oddities I made sure the whole business was parallel to the guiltar. I then told the guiltarist if he moved, I'd have him flogged. (don't try this if your guitarist has a snotty nose, as it's essentially pointing up at his face...)

I listened in mono, and it didn't appear to be doing any weird phase things. It seemed to have a pretty sweet sound, and decent stereo separation, but I"m wondering what you guys have tried that works?

I'm not too big on the sound of Micing other spots on the guitar, like by the bridge, and I'd think that there's a greater risk of phase issues with minute movements of the guitar(?), so I'd like to keep the mics reasonably close together near that 14th fret if possible.

any ideas or experiences?

Here's my latest acoustic guitar recording. This was the first time I had tried stereo. I ended up with XY. I think it was somewhere between Fret 12 and the sound hole, about 14" from the guitar.

Vocals were recorded at the same time. This is STRAIGHT out of the box. Only levels were tweaked - no EQ, no compression. I think the guitar sounds pretty good.
