I'm working with a little "home studio" I've been setting up (with much help from the forums here.) I'm running mixer, comps, expander/gates, mics, some EQ and. While I got it working ok for now I'd really like to increase my knowledge of engineering. Searching the web and trolling through the information in forums like this is nice, but I'd like to get some volumes to start building my knowledge on the subject. So what do I want...

Can anyone recommend me a book(s) to take an idiot with toys to a novice engineer?
