hi all...it's been a long time since i made a topic on this forum. here i am again with doubts of course.
i start with my system specs
P4 2.4 G FSP 533 HT
MOBO ASUS P4PE SATA and PROMISE CONTR. on board
1 GIG KINGSTON RAM PC 2700
MATROX G550 GR.CARD
WD 40 GB 8 MB CACHE on first IDE bus with XP SP1 and progs installed on it
WD 80 GB 8 MB CACHE on second IDE bus ...which i would like to keep it for samples and others...
and...and...
i also have two new WD RAPTORS 36 GIGS EACH...which i would like to set them in RAID 0 array for best performance...i want to use many midi tracks with Vstis and lots of effects.
i have a RME HDSP 9632 soundcard with the latest driver
the problem is :before i have used the second wd 80 gigs for audio data an it worked fine till one point when i have loaded lots of VSTIs the CPU meter grew up to 90 % and it started with pops and clicks...so then i dicided to go for raptors for better perform...
but the things are not going like i thought...since i installed them in RAID 0 array i got less performance than before...
so i want anyone with experience in sata drives...to help me set them up in the best way for a good perform...
if the RAID 0 is not a good idea to go,then what is the best way to go

If you set up the raptors independantly, you get better combined performance. But you also have to worry about file organization since you're dealing with 2 37GB drives instead of 1 74GB RAID.
I don't know how to activate and deactivate RAID on your computer, but I'm sure you can find help if you look around the net. Try forums that discuss your motherboard, for instance this one: http://www.abxzone.com/

If you're running a software controlled RAID, you're gonna see less performance, because the CPU has to devote a portion of time to managing the RAID array. That means less CPU for you VSTi's and so on. So if that's the case, you can scrap that.
When the cpu is being heavily used, drive performance drops. That is basically unavoidable because the CPU has to manage disk access, to some extent, and if the CPU's attention is elsewhere.... Faster drives will not solve that, but they may mitigate the problem somewhat. But don't look for a huge difference. And if you add a Software controlled RAID to that, then it gets worse, not better.
If you really want to do a RAID, get a hardware RAID controller. Like [="http://raid.adaptec.com/AAR-2410SA.html"]this one.[/]="http://raid.adaptec…"]this one.[/]
(But beware that a PCI RAID card may hog the PCI bus, and cause clicks and pops with your soundcard. That's what happened to me when I tried to build an ATA/133 RAID with a SIIG PCI RAID Controller. However I have heard good things about the RME cards cooperating with SCSI and RAID cards.)
