I am expecting one in the mail shortly. I bought it mainly for electric guitar miking, but I am curious of others' experiences with it. Particularly for voice and acoustic guitar applications. Under what circumstances would you choose it over an SM58 for voice? Under what circumstances would you choose it over an SM57 for acoustic guitar? Anything else you can tell me about the mic?

I own a few Heils- a pair of PR-40's, a PR-30, a PR-35. I had a pair of PR-20's (in RED!) and I sold them. I liked them all, but I liked the PR-20's the least. They were simply too bright in many situations, and I didn't care for the whimpy mic clips that were provided with them. If you have a 57 now, the PR20 may be an acceptable alternative, but if I was alone on a desert island and had to choose between those 2 mics, I'd have to go with the 57/58.

I just purchased a case of RODE M1's to replace SM58 for both tracking and live work. I sold all my older 57/58 a few years back so I haven't actually done an A/B. The reviews on the M1 seem to be pretty possitive including durability. I'm using mine with the FF800 and StudioLive 24.4.2 and they sound really smooth. They are indeed smoother than I expected so I'm very happy with them. The days of using an SM58 to protect and/or ward off drunken bar room scraps are over so I can't vouch for head shots, dropping them on concrete for the ultimiate comparison impact testing lol. I'd definitely look at those.

Thanks. Yeah I would imagine it would be a little bright for most applications other than high gain guitar amps. The reason I bought one is because I learned that it's supposedly the Jerry Cantrell (Alice in Chains) mic, and I love his guitar tones. It's supposed to be a sweeter sounding SM57 with a more extended bottom end and a little less high mid spike. Sounded nice, and I got a nice deal on it so I figured what the hell, why not.

I'd expect as well that he would. I was actually recommended the mic by an engineer who also gets really great recorded guitar tones. I guess I'll have to do some testing of my own to see what works well in my own space and with my playing style etc. You are right, if there is one thing I have learned it is that the player makes the gear, not the other way around!

I just wish it were working in my favor!
