Everybody says that the kicks on hophop album are so in your face because of compression. Can some one explain. i hav tried it and it seems to make the kick louder but duller or lack of life. the hip hop kicks on the albums are clear present and still have a lot ofdepth and still jump through the speakers

tryin increasing your attack time so that the transient is allowed through and set your release time so that it seems to release intime with the music, its generally a fast to medium release time. The most important thing though is to have a good sample to begin with.
Don't over compress it. 4:1 and gate it, DO NOT LIMIT. Also,

Also, listen to the sound of those "album" kicks. There is a lot more high end in them than you think. This gives them their punch.
