Hi all! I'm wondering if anyone has tried this with results that proved worthy. I want to know if anyone has miked their toms from the bottom on the resonant head, but not the batter head (and let the overheads just accommodate).

I've been recording a few drummers lately, and they end up hitting the mic, usually ruining the take.

I've done that a few times but went back to miking on top. You'll have to do the same thing you do with miking the bottom of a snare drum. You'll have to invert the phase on the bottom microphones, with reference to the overheads. Otherwise it will sound like he is hitting cardboard boxes. You might also want to consider gating them?

Let us know how it goes?
