Hmmmm tr@nz...how are you measuring that? Using the Echo console, from within your sequencing software, or some other way? With nothing connected, I do not see any movement of the level meters in either the Echo console or in Cubase SX...

Interesting question, and one I have never thought about. I always mute the unused Layla channels on the console, and when mixing, everything is muted. I am using 16 inputs on the Layla...the 8 analog inputs that I use for line level signals (guitar preamps, bass DI's, keyboard DI's etc.), then I also use the 8 ADAT digital inputs that are coming from my PreSonus Digimax. So for every track I record, I open up the Echo console, and un-mute any tracks that are needed. After laying the tracks down, I open the console back up, and re-mute all the tracks.

I just started doing this a few months ago, not sure if it helps or not, but if there is any noise coming in at the Layla inputs, they are hopefully not making it all way into my recording software unless I am tracking with that channel.

Please let us know how you are measuring that noise level, and then I will compare it to mine.

Hi DH,

I went back and unplugged everything. Like you said nothing registers on the Layla console. Good.
When I plug in my Triton, just barely a sliver is showing.
However, what I had done to monitor samples in Recycle whilst having Cubase and Reason open, I ran output 3 and 4 into input 7 and 8. This is what caused the console to register noise at -70dB. But I have yet to figure out a way to listen to Recycle samples at the same time as using Cubase. They seem to automatically choose the next available outputs.

Sorry, I have never used Reason, or anything through Recycle, so I can't help you much there. It sounds like you have things under control however. I have an old ART guitar preamp that I drag out every now and again. It has some great old sounds, and is different than the same old Pod/Amplitube/Nigel sounds. It does the same thing as your Triton however. If I have it connected to a couple of the analog inputs, it registers slightly on the Layla console, even when muted. At least by muting, I know nothing is getting through (I hope!). It is better just to physically disconnect them however. Maybe you should look into a patchbay for your Triton, and the Layla repatching tasks. I got one a few months ago, and it makes my life sooooo much easier!

Do you have the Layla24 controller setup to have the volume button clicked at -10 or +4? What was your reasoning behind it?

It is too bad that you can't just have the controller patch inputs and outputs internally to whatever configuration desired. I heard that the RME cards do allow this.

Sorry, I can't help you with the RME cards, but i wouldn't be surprised...good stuff there.

The choice between "-10 and +4" is the old "consumer vs. pro gear" debate, and it is beyond the scope of this thread, but here is thread from recently that goes into it a bit:

With my Layla, I choose the level that matches the equipment that I am using. Almost all of my gear works at the Pro level of +4, but occasionally if I have a piece of gear that I can't get the level high enough on, I will switch to the -10 setting. I know that is not a lot of info, but it is kind of my rule of thumb...if the level is too low (or too high)...change the setting!!! :)

Here's another piece of info to cloud the +4 / -10 dB issue. :D Mackie 1604 and SR24/32 mixers run at an internal level of 0db! :confused: I'm not sure about the 8 Bus, check your manuals. 10db louder than consumer gear and 4dB down from pro level. The reasoning is that 0dB level will be compatible to -10dB and +4dB levels. I use ADAT AI3 interfaces and I switch between -10dB for recording and +4dB to mix (if I use the mixer to mix). This gives me a lower level to drive from the Mackie keeping headroom for recording and provides more level into the mixer for mixing, insuring adaquate headroom once again. Remember what our friend Bill Roberts has told us repeatedly it's important to keep internal channel levels in these Mackies down to -10dB on the meters (pfl) to insure adaquate power supply headroom, otherwise it's SPLAT!. ...... Fats :w:

Everytime I am surprised at how quick the response is on this forum. Thanks DoubleHelix, that is what I thought. But since I am still learning, thought it better to confirm.

Do you know whether it matters where in a rack the Layla is placed? For example I have set my Layla below a 2U tube pre-amp /digital processor. Just wondering in terms of interference etc.
