I'm using an Mbox and PowerMac to record ambient sound backgrounds for film. I've been using a pair of Schoeps MK-2 omnis but they are not available for this project.

I'm looking for a cheap alternative. A friend suggested Studio Projects C4s in with omni capsule. The recordings will be done outside (in China and Hawaii) and in large public buildings. This will all be stereo.

I'm generally looking for a light airy sound.

Any experience with the C4 or do you have alternative suggestions?

Hi Alioth.

I have a pair of C4-s and also a pair of Neumann KM183-s and have had the opportunity to compare them face to face. The C4-s seems drop the very lowest bass a bit more than the KM183-s, not really much though. They are also not quite as "sweet" as the Neumanns in the sound. Apart from that I find them quite useful and they come along on all my onsite recordings. Lately did a three omni mic recording of a childs choir with one SP on the flank and the two Neumanns in the middle, all coming out really well.

Compared to the Schoeps (or for that matter the Neumanns) you are a step below in quality. I would expect them to work very well though for most uses.

But there is another alternative you might want to look into. The DPA 4061, ultrasmall omnis, has some diehard fans. I´ve heard the results of the recordings and they really shine. These mics are not that far off in price level.

Anyway, with mics I really think you have to listen yourself.

Gunnar.
