I have been struggling to get a decent bass tone lately. I have Amplitube SVX in the DAW and I am using an LA-610 as a direct in to my sound card. I just cant seem to get any good mid tone out of it. It just sounds kinda dull and lifeless and the eqs on SVX dont seem to find and freqs to boost when I adjust them. Could it just be my bass? I'm just using a Peavey Millenium BXP passive. When I would play live, everyone complimented me on my tone and I was pretty happy with it too. I was putting it through an SWR Workingman's combo at the time. Maybe that had a lot to do with it. I just dont get why I cant get that nice middy, fuzzy tone that I love on recordings of Beck and many others. I'm only a part time bass player btw. Thanks! Any and all help or advice is welcome.

Thanks Soap. I've got the LA-610 Line Out to the Motu Line In. Simple as that. I'm starting to think that my bass is just really that dull sounding. I know it could use some new strings but still. I'm going to have to give the SWR head a try because it does indeed have an XLR out. THanks for the help.

Yes, I should take advantage of this possibility. THe problem is that, even though I enjoyed my live sound with the SWR, it's still not the sound I am after right now. It's a nice clean sound but doesn't sustain well. Maybe I should really look at one of the VT Bass pedals to combine with the amp to see if that gets me there. If anything - your gear is probably too good to do fuzzy. Beck and guys of that genre are wizards at extracting interesting / weird tones from pawn shop oddity type instruments and cheap amps. That specific Cake song sounds to me like it's had the holy crap compressed out of it with a tube compressor.

As a (somewhat former) bassist myself, I think I can provide some insight.
I've owned an old 80's Peavey (hand-me-down from my older bro), a Warwick 5-Thumb, and a Corvette 6 string. Played almost every other.
Own a '96 Carvin amp, Ampeg BA-115, and GB 300W +4x10 combo - also played on many an SWR (8x8, Workingman's, etc) that a friend owned (he also used Warwick, in addition to Alembic, Lakland, and custom made basses).
I've just listed a liturgy of basses and amps, so you know where I'm coming from.
The SWR amps (and Warwicks) really lend themselves to that low-mid/mid growl.
Like any source, it's the source (the instrument) that most determines if a recording is good.
Yours is a decent one. The LA-610 is a wonderful preamp.
Do you still have the SWR? Does it have an XLR out? Maybe that's the tone you want?
Without the SWR, it seems you have the tools to get the sound you want. If not, add in that baby.
One questions remains though:
How exactly ARE you connecting the LA-610 to your "soundcard"?
This could be the biggest problem of all?
