Can any of you give any tips on the best condenser mic to use for heavy growling vocals, an example would be, Chester Bennington from Linkin Park or maybe something in the likes of Phil Anselmo from Pantera, or Chad Gray from Mudvayne.

A lot of growly stuff is actually recorded with a SM58, mostly because the artist may want to move around alot with the mic in hand. Most artists like that have developed a stage technique that they want to carry over into their recordings.

For Pre's, geez, um...I'd try out a 1073, a 610, and the Sebatron. It's too hard to nail it down without actually hearing it.

Soundelux iFET7 in V mode. I can't even sell a Soundelux into Europe so I don't benefit one bit from recommending this to you, I just think it's an incredible mic especially in this application. Email me and I'll give you a link of a very heavy band I recorded a couple months ago and we used that mic. It smoked every mic including dynamic mics, which were thin in comparison.

Yeah rudedog, A12 kills for screamy growly stuff. Especially if you want it up front. If you want the vox muckier or, uh, not so out front, then something else might be better. But I did a screamer/growler with just a SPC1 through an A12 and it ruled. Beyerdynamic m69 or m88 can be cool too if you want to try a dynamic. Too much personal preference for you to get one definitive answer on this though.

okey.. mainly i want the sound to be "in your face". And at the same time a very rich and clear sound. But i'll guess i'll have to test some of the mics you mentioned and hear what i like. By the way is the Avalon M5 good for these kinda vocals? And i couldnt find any info on the Soundlux mics on the net... do they have a webpage or anything?
