How are the XLR pres on MOTU units anyway? Particularly the 896. Any feedback would be great.

Anyone out there ever heard of a MD611 Dynamic? This is an old mic I just found going through the old equipment box and was wondering if it's got any use in the studio. Did a search but couldn't come up with this one at Sennheiser site.

How does one get really good realistic strings in a project studio? I have only a couple of synths and the strings aren't very good. Can anyone advise? I also have a sampler at my disposal.

Please don't suggest hiring the Berliner Philharmonic I'm on a tight budget here! :D

In great anticipation of receiving my "new" megamix.. (scored one Friday! YEAH ME!)...

My first work will be obviously to get the unit up and running as quickly as paractical... but after that I've got a project to work on getting mixed. It's a gospel project... really good southern gospel.

My specific question is this;

With the low Dollar American products are very good value at the moment. I'm looking for a nice characterful compressor to add to my collectionand this one has been recommended, (Albeit by the importer!). Anyone know anything good or bad? 8)

I'm tracking brass next week (trombone and trumpet). in a small
recording booth (about 9 by 12 foot) with decent acoustics.
Music is pop/rock with open minded musiciens willing to experiment if necessary.
I've never done this, It would save me some time if I had some help. Could someone give me advice regarding mike choice, placement and distance?

M-Audio 1010
Yamaha MG12 mixer
a bunch of mics and instruments

Now how exactly do I configure the M-Audio/ yahama mixer relationship in order to multitrack record on Cool Edit with as many tracks as I can?

Any experience with these? I'm focusing mainly on down tempo hip hop with plenty of bass. Any suggestions? $1000 limit (i found a spanking "new" used 909 for $1000 out the door)
