I was asked to help my friend to build a home studio around his dual athlon comp. I suggested him to buy a really great preamp/compressor for use with computer. It can be either 2 channel or even a single channel unit.

I got this old tower from a guy at work for free, he said the HD was bad. I want to set this PC up for use as my Midi PC and use my other PC for my DAW. I am not sure of what is in this comp as far as the motherboard, processor, even what OS it is running, I want to say its a PII but I am not sure. Can you guys tell me what to look for and how to find out exactly what the system specs are.

Please dont laugh, but I need some advice on the following EQ settings. I use Cubase SX and I have a 15 band 2/3 octave, 12db boost or cut EQ plugin which I would like to set up to imitate a hi fi setup for Classical, Rock, Pop, and Dance, so that I can get a little idea what my music will sound like on average, with different hifi setups. So I am borrowing an Archos Jukebox Recorder 20 from a buddy. He just uses it for mp3's and some file storage but I want more! it has recording capabilities, but when recording the audio is nasty (self noise from the unit) and it only has a line in... Any suggestions on a portable hard disk recording unit that has decent audio inputs.

How close is too close as far as them being next to a computer display? The spec sheet says that they are electromagnetically shielded... Hmm...

20bit AD/DA. I am planning to switch to Nuendo (I thing it will be better for my sutdio)
