Oh man oh man, this could be good. Fingers crossed. @$1199 it's excellent per channel cost, got input And output xformers, and also an an output knob per channel, which could be useful when not only for good gain staging, but especially if these trannys overdrive pleasantly. Plus the op amps are easily swappable. If I'm dreaming I don't wanna wake up! I hope it sounds as cool as it seems on paper!
I wanted to introduce a new 312 style mic preamp to the forum. The Warm Audio WA12 is completely discrete with custom wound USA made Cinemag transformers, 71db's of gain and high headroom. I've sold 8 channels of this design to a Neve console owner in Florida at a much higher price, it is the real deal. Though the price tag suggests otherwise, this is not a budget or sub-pro piece of gear, it hangs right along side pres with much loftier price tags.
I have two 2520's and one original Jensen 75101 but In need one more as well as a pair of 2164 or 2503. not sure havent tallied the job and pieces all yet, just started last night. I like the idea of vintage pieces as opposed to new. That might be a mistake and feel free to correct me if I am wrong...Anyway, had a great time racking in the past. Someone point me somewhere for used pieces on either coast but prefer the west. Thank you again for all of your help.
i saw an api 312 for sale
would this be a good mic to use on vocals?
and if so do i need a rack for it?
Info about the 212 and the 512 series preamps is not hard to come by.
However, the 312 is more elusive. Were they manufactured for use in any of the 1970's consoles? If so, was there some sort of faceplate? Does anyone have pictures?
I've just purchased one of the vintage 312 cards and I'm looking for another in order to put together a 2 channel unit so I'd like to get as much background as possible.
I am adding some more API modules and I love my Brent Averill Neve 1272. Does anyone own his 312a's? How do they compare to the 512c's?
The circuit is extremely simple, and all of the parts can be purchased... For the output transformer, you have 2 options. Either buy them for $50 from Dan Alexander Audio (dont know if he has any or how many he has), or get a group order together and get them for about $20 - $25 (from the original manufacturer)depending on shipping costs etc... So what I'm basically asking in this post is for everyone who is interested in a group order on the output mic transformers to PM me and let me know how many you'd want to buy. So far we have interest for 40 units, so we need another 60!
Has anyone ever done a comparison between API's two preamp modules, the 212 and 512? And we might as well throw in Brent's version of the 312. I like the idea of a simple, straightforward preamp like the 212, without extras like multiple I/O, etc., and its also a couple of hundred cheaper than the 512. The big downside is that it doesn't fit in my 500 series rack empty slots. Brent's 312 seems like a good compromise in that it costs around the same as the 212 but fits in the 500 series racks.
