microphones, tube vs. . Electret, cardioid, omni, etc.

Hello, I'm new to the forum.

I'm a singer/songwriter, and in the process of setting up my home recording studio.

Here's what I have:

PC is a Dell 2400 series, Intel Pentium 4 Processor at 2.20GHz, 256MB, hard drive 40GB.

Martin D35

Roland MA-8 Monitors (a gift)

Beyer dynamic M88N(C) mic. (old, but rebuilt)

cardiod mains placement for small orchestra

I no that a spaced pair of cardiod mics is not what you want for your mains but it you had to do it that way where would be the best placement for mics for a small string orchestra maybe 40 members. I would normally place my mains about 10-12 feet up, two feet in back of conductor. Mics at 35 degree angle down and out. This is very bad sounding to bright and harsh.

Omni's or Cardioid's for Drumover heads?

Hey guys as some of you may have seen on a previous post I'm trying to decide on some new overheads. My basic problem now is deciding on cards or omni's. The mics i'm looking at are, Josephson C42's (card's) Earthworks TC30's (omni's) or SRO's or I've also been turned on to the Avenson's (omni's). For rock and country overheads. Card or Omni?

Electro-Voice DS35 mic

Does anyone know anything about this mic? I was just looking through some old equipment I had thrown in a box. I found this mic which I had written off apparently. I was just about to throw it away when I looked at the brand name and thought, what the hell, I'll look it up on the 'net. Well, lots of people have one, but I couldn't find a price or review on it.

sonic differences between AT4040 and AT4050 at cardioid

hi friends1
I am a big fan of AT mic line. In fact I have three on here, workin fine since 1996, used for orchestras, horn bands, in almost every day job recording section.
I want to buy another mic. what are the differences between at4050 at cardioid and the new :p model at4040 that only does cardioid?
will they function as a couple?
thanks

Hypercardioid pattern: Too tight for single overhead?

Your thoughts requested, especially impressions from any who've tried this. What I'm contemplating is using my new Beyer M260 with Sank mod as a single drum overhead in Fletcher's three-mic technique. I'm a week out from this session, and wondering if its hypercardioid pickup will present too tight an image.
