Help me select the right gear for me
I have about $200-$250 to spend on recording equipment. I would just be having fun with my own music and would be recording an acoustic guitar, mandolin, ukulele, and possibly an electric guitar. Since I know virtually nothing about recording, I have looked into different "starter packages" to help me get started.
I think I have it narrowed down to two packages:

Help a noob pick out gear and answer questions!
So I've finally made the decision to piece together a cheap home studio to record my band and other local groups. I already run live shows so I have some equipment. This is what I have to work with...
laying gear flat vs. tilted
Just curious why mastering engineers have their gear flat rather than tilted like recording engineers? I'm guessing its to do with reflections and having the gear right at their "hand, eye, ear" proximity? But how do you see?

Keyboard player searching for gear to record/live
I was interested in the Allen & Heath ZED 14 mixer to use for live performance as well as recording,
the flaw I found with the ZED is its 1.1 USB.I was thinking of adding a Focusrite Scartlette 2i2 USB 2.0,
is this a good combination for recording with my Lenovo labtop?I dont have firewire on the computer(I will be recording keyboard music only)

Photo gear spotting, need help
Hi,
Does anybody recognize what's in the wooden rack between the mpc3000 and Roland synth?
Too big to be a 500 series lunchbox, Neve Portico perhaps?
Thanks in advance.

Trade work for gear (Sweet Deals)
I have a friend that owes me money for side work I did for him, he's an ex music engineer, he's pretty broke so he's willing to cut me deals on mint condition gear from his now closed down studio.
I'm in the market for a new interface and pre's, since my old setup has ran out of life.
Here's the deals he's working to hook me up with.

Hi and please critique my gear before I invest
Hi all – So happy to be here. Excellent resource. I am a music industry “veteran” who had a lot of recording time in the 80s and 90s. So…while not being a noob to the recording music world, I have been away a long while. I am a little familiar with DAWs and the recording culture of 2012 - -but only a little.
