Whats the best bang for the buck Mic preamp-- Need headroom
Hello. Currently have an ART TubePac-decent, but need more headroom. FMR RNP looks interesting. (and the price range) Any opinion, and or direction would help. Thank, Barefoot. (currently recording mostly Female Vox.)
Max Headroom and Darth Vader. .
How do you produce these with DAW software:
1) The studder effect of Max Headroom ? Ca-Ca-Ca-Catch the wave...
I can stack/cut/paste vocal loops in a multitrack, but this seems tedious. Is there a specific plugin for this?
2) Darth Vader glass jar effect ?
What kind of Reverb/Effect combination would this be?

Vocal Headroom - Gain
I've run into a small problem on the vocal track for the project I'm working on...I'm recording a male vocalist through an e300(2) and an Aphex 207. Normaly, to set an appropriate gain on my preamp i turn on the live monitor feature in Nuendo and set accordingly...making sure it sounds "loud enough" and there's ample headroom on both the LED readout on my preamp and the gauge in Nuendo.

Have at least 20 dB headroom
The optimal setting is imo setting all faders to -14 dB (+ 6 dB fain = 20 dB)
This way you will have more room to mix and to place tracks in the front end.
My experience is that the sound is more open, wide, clear, deep, warm, clean and professional.
just 0.2 cts.

Oh.. RTAS plugs... less headroom?
Hi! I know this does not make sense but...
I was finishing a mix a few hours ago. As I were using plenty of plugs and was a little lazy to deactivate some so as to open the junior mastering plugs across the master fader, a strange thing happened:
At first, I had: Q10RTAS > TC MASTER X 5 TDM > Power Dither TDM > PAZ TDM

Headroom
Got a question for you, When I plug my guitar into the line in of my cheap designed for games soundcard, I have to pull the fader(in the windows volume control-recording panel) damn near all the way down. The music still comes back at a decent level, comparable to an mp3 I have stored on the hard disk. But I was wondering if this was normal.

I gained 10db headroom with new P4 system
Go figure. Over at seasoundaudio.com, we've been working collectively to write drivers and improve our Seasound Solo 24/96(SS went out of business, it was Tom Oberheim's company).

Sytek Headroom
I tracked a college rock band this past weekend and I grew a bit fustrated with the limited headroom on my Sytek mic preamp's.
I used them on a SRW bass cabinet/RE-20, a fender amp/M-88, snare/57, and kick/TLM-103. I had to move the kick to a different mic preamp because it would overload with the gain all the way down. The mic was about 3-4 feet in front of the kick.

summing buss headroom / floating point
With another thread brought up regarding the sh*tty sound in pro-tools...I was left thinking today as I sat at a contol-24 - Playing with the 7k mouse, I started to dwell upon the premise of that the only sound of pro-tools (other that converters and plugs)is the summing math of the software.
