expanding FirePod channels using MacBook Pro

hey guys,

i am looking at a cheap way of expanding channels on my existing Mac Book Pro / PreSonus FirePOD set up.

I am aware that i can buy another PreSonus FirePod and chain them together however... i am looking to add a cheaper alternative... and additional 4-8 Channels (12 -16 total) would do me just fine... just wondering if anyone has a similar setup?

iMac/Macbook Digital Audio I/O

Good morning! I just helped an older friend of mine who is a self-proclaimed "Analog man living in a Digital world" order a new 17" iMac. He's upgrading from an old G3 "color" iMac that is like 7 years old. I've only been a Mac user since May of 2006, so my knowledge is still limited. Now, I know that new macs have a "Audio line in/optical digital audio input (minijack)".

Recording Via Macbook Pro's Optical SPDIF

Is anybody out there recording straight into their Macbook Pro's optical SPDIF?

Is it possible to hook up a system that goes: preamp ---> A/D/A ---> Macbook Pro optical SPDIF?

If so, what are the drawbacks to this? Are there any quality issues? Would I be better off with a two-channel firewire system?

Macbook Pro laptop...too expensive?

Im looking at purchasing a laptop to run Pro Tools. My school and the rest of the world uses Macs. Im not against Macs at all but a $2300 macbook pro seems pretty hard to justify.
