Best mic preamp (and budget pre) to pair with an SM57?
I really like using this on my voice. It seems to work fairly well.
I have heard that dynamic mics are affected much more strongly by preamps than condenser mics because the gain change required is so much greater.
This leads to two questions:
1) Will a better mic preamp fundamentally change the sound of a 57?

Help buying my first mic preamp amp
I apologize for my newbie question.
Up until now, I have only been recording by plugging my mic directly into my digital recorder.
What exactly will a preamp do for me? (for vocals, acoustic guitar)
I'm just looking for a decent one around $150 or even less.
Many thanks for any info.

Can you split the output of a mic preamp?
I have a small home-studio that shares space with our bands practice space. When we practice, we are plugged into the mixer for the PA. When we want to record, we have to take time to unplug from the mixer and plugin to the preamps in the studio (Seventh Circle, ART Digital MPA).

Any problems with using Tube mic and Tube preamp?
I currently have MXL v69 mogami edition tube mic and i'm looking for the right preamp. i was thinking of getting a tube preamp but somebody had told that some problems might arise. i just wanted to make sure if i do decide to get a tub preamp there won't be any problems.
Microphone preamps and long cables
I am looking for some advice regarding location recording using a multicore cable.
I have heard that it is better to place a mic preamp BEFORE the signal goes through a long cable to minimize the signal losses.
So my question is: Is this true and if yes, what can be regarded as a long cable?

$399 or less single channel Tube mic preamp
I'm looking for a single channel tube mic preamp for $399 or less. I know I'm asking for a lot without having to resort to a starved plate design. I don't mind shopping used if need be. It'll be used on vocals and mic'd electric guitar.
I'd love to go for the UA Solo/610, but at $800 it's a bit out of my range.

software compressor kill the need for "colored" mics/preamps
I'm looking for a mic and a preamp for home studio recordings.
I reckon that if I buy a nice clean mic (Neumann TLM 103) and a nice clean preamp (Apogee Mini-Me), I'll do whatever tone coloring I need with a high class software compressor (for example UAD, Voxengo Marquis, etc).
So, no need for "colored" mics and/or preamps.
What do you think about this?
Micing into 2 preamps
Here's anouther question for you guy's
Anybody ever track vocals or whatever using a splitter or perhaps even 2 mics side by side through 2 mic preamps to seperate tracks?
I thought this might be useful if you had 2 diff sounding preamps (ex. one dark, one bright) that during mixdown you could blend accordingly to taste, or even pan left/right etc.
