kick mic on snare

I'm thinking to myself how much i hate the snare sound on most recordings. too bright, too snappy, sounds like a tin can.. etc.

so pensados fb page asked about snare mics and one or two people like using kick/bass mics. I'm gonna try it regardless but I'm wondering:

what are your thoughts?
ever done it? over or under?
what were the results?

Micing a snare drum for use with jazz brushes

Well, I wish to rec the snare while playing it with brushes: since I am total new to the "Micing world", I will gladly accept any advice about the ways to get a good result
Actually, I tried it parallel to the ground, 3cm away from the snare: the result seem's decent to me, but I suppose the existence of some "old classic" way to this :)

thanks :)

Getting Nashville Snare Sound?

Anyone here have any idea how a lot of the folks in Nashville doing the newer country material manage to produce such a hard hitting - yet extremely transparent - snare? Does anyone know what mic's/placement/EQ is generally being used? It's driving me batty... Too much compression sounds fake, too much volume kills the transparency, and extreme EQ's just sound bad... Any suggestions?
