Mixing down to 16-bit

Member for

Hey everybody,

I have recorded my songs in 24-bit, and as the last part of the process, as I am mastering, I am also using a 'UV22HR' plugin to convert into 16 as I create the WAV files. At least that's my understanding.  However, I'm reading now that I should mix to the same bit rate as my session was recorded in.

Monitoring and mixing down LIVE (NOT "Export Mixdown")...cannot do with new soundcard

Member for

Hello all.

I use Cubase 5.5.3. I've recently switched to a new soundcard, a Native Instruments "AUDIO 6".
I used to use an RME Fireface 400 but changed because I needed something I could also use when out DJing.
With my previous soundcard, I was able to mixdown previously recorded parts, LIVE, and see the levels in my live monitoring channel. For some unknown reason, I cannot do this anymore. If I record enable the channel I want to record to, I see no levels whatsoever.

Clipping problem when mixing down

I have a project which contains a vocal track that has its volume elevated to the point of clipping - on purpose. It sounds really nice. When I play it in my program (Sonar 7) it sounds nice, at least. This is because the only track that is clipping is the vocal track, and everything else comes through clear when it does. When I export and mix down to a single stereo track, bad things happen. The whole track clips whenever the vocals clip. Um, I'm not exactly a professional, more along the lines of a beginner.

Need help with mixing down in Cubase sx3

Member for

I'm currenlty having trouble with the quality of mix downs in Cubase sx3, their not as powerful as what i'm hearing back during mixing (lacking stero space and power once played on other stereos etc). I also use a set of Sennheiser headphones as reference monitors whilst mixing to check placement etc etc

My setup includes

p4
2 delta 1010's
Mackie 24 channel desk
Tannoy monoitors

Mixing down in the studio

If you recorded all your tracks for your new song(s) in your own studio. And then wanted to mix them down at a real nice studio. With a high dollar console. Which way is the best way to approach the owner so that you will get the best deal.
The last 2 or 3 times we went to a bigger studio we just payed whatever the owner asked for. Typically they wanted an hourly rate. Does this sound like the best way or which of these suggestions might be better overall...
1) pay per song
2) pay per hour
3) pay flat price to mixdown all the songs

Mixing down drums w/ sample

If the drums have been recorded. And now it's time to mix them down. How do you use the kick mic as the trigger for the kick drum sample?
Or do you have to record with a trigger on the kick drum?
I want to be able to select (or dial in) the right sounding kick drum sample during mixdown. I don't want to have to do it all during tracking. Mainly because then later I can find the perfect drum kit sample for the song.
