Compression & EQ - in what order do you use them ?

I thought a discussion would be in order, considering that most of us will often use both.

Accordingly, I thought it would be interesting to see what our members think, and how you approach the order of EQ and Compression in a mix...

The discussion doesn't need to be limited to just the track level, or just the bus level.

Need advice on what to send to a label in order to get a "release of claims". . .

So I'm working on the birth of a record label that will be releasing old field recordings of local heritage type music. A decade or two ago my boss gave some of those recordings to County Records and they used some of them in a compilation. My boss has the original masters and nothing was signed when he handed over copies of the recordings.

2nd Order and 3rd Order Harmonic Generators

For sometime now I have looking all over the net for a thread about the various ways to spice up your mic pre or compressor or well anything…. by adding a little subtle distortion.

Boxes like SSL alpha and UA twin infinity pre add a 2nd or 3rD harmonic generator that allows the user to dial in a bit of distortion.

Signal path and Order of rack mount gear

I am wondering about the order in which I should set up my devices. I am recording guitar direct (or bass) and wish to run it through a Lexicon MX200 effects processor, a preamp, a compressor, and then obviously the last connection will be my Firebox DI box.

In what order should I run the compressor, Lexicon (for a little reverb), and preamp?

Device order or software help needed from expert.

I'm currently doing some home recording with an older version of Adobe Audition pro. I'm very new to how digital recording works, and how to set it up, but I get the basics. I'm having issues with the metronome. Where am I supposed to plug my headphones into to hear the metronome and not have it incorporate itself into the recording?
